A big week at Butternut Creek, as Pasco Excavation started work excavating a 1.5 acre wetland in the heart of our nature reserve! Consisting of five inter-connected ponds of varying shapes and sizes and fed by seven ground springs, the wetland will be a haven for dozens of vulnerable species. While we have been concerned about the damage inflicted on the landscape by the excavation process, we are confident that the end result will be worth it: shallow aquatic habitats such as these are incredibly rich, and will support a vast variety of species, including turtles, ducks, shorebirds, frogs, snakes, salamanders, crawfish, herons and insects beyond count. With the excavation complete, the next stage of work begins…with tree and shrub planting and seeding of wetland plants and grasses and wildflowers! Project funding generously provided by Ducks Unlimited Canada and ALUS.
